MILLIS -- Town Administrator Mike Kuczynski told the Finance Committee on September 30 that the town has established a "fields task force" that includes town officials and representatives of local sports programs, including football and baseball, to come up with "better systems for maintaining all our outside grounds."
TOWN -- As part of that effort, the town is looking at having the school department share equipment with the Department of Public Works. Kuczynski said the DPW's skid steer is needed most during snowstorms, the same time schools need it most. Under the plan being discussed, the DPW's older skid steer would be transferred to the school department, while the DPW would acquire a newer skid steer through state Chapter 90 funds, avoiding the need for local funding. Kuczynski said the school department currently rents a skid steer every year for about $12,000, a cost the swap is intended to eliminate. He said the DPW uses its skid steer roughly 10 times as often as the school does, and the hand-me-down unit should serve the school "for at least three to five years."
